The Wharfedale EVO 4.2 brings genuine flagship loudspeaker technology into a stand-mount bookshelf format. Developed directly from the research that produced the ELYSIAN range, the EVO 4.2 borrows core technologies from that programme and applies them to a speaker designed for real-world listening rooms and serious music reproduction at a more accessible scale.
The centrepiece is the Air Motion Transformer tweeter. The 30 x 60mm AMT is a radically different approach to high frequency reproduction, folding a pleated diaphragm to move air with far greater efficiency and lower distortion than a conventional dome tweeter. The result is high frequency detail that is fast, extended, and accurate without the hardness or fatigue that lesser tweeters introduce at volume.
A 50mm soft dome midrange driver handles the critical vocal and instrumental frequencies between 1.4kHz and 3.9kHz, keeping the AMT focused on the upper register and the 6.5-inch black woven Kevlar cone bass driver focused on the lower octaves. The Kevlar cone is lightweight and stiff, resisting the breakup modes that colour the bass output of lesser materials. This three-way architecture keeps each driver working within its ideal range, which is audible in the clarity and separation of complex musical passages.
The cabinet draws on ELYSIAN-derived construction principles. Radiused edges reduce diffraction at the baffle, integrating driver output with room acoustics more naturally. The SLPP bass reflex system, developed originally for ELYSIAN, extends low frequency performance to 48Hz at minus 6dB and 54Hz within plus or minus 3dB, delivering genuine bass weight from a bookshelf enclosure.
Sensitivity of 87dB at 2.83V and a nominal 8-ohm impedance make the EVO 4.2 compatible with a wide range of amplifiers from 25 to 120W, with a peak SPL of 105dB providing headroom for dynamic musical passages without compression.
